Over the yardarm

So today we not only had a pint of ale at 11am... We learned the meaning of "sun's over the yardarm" which is actually around 11am: when the sun appears above the horizontal spars at the top of the mast on a sailing ship in the North Atlantic - that's when the first tots of rum would be issues to officers and men on board....
