Lindisfarne
The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is a tidal island off the northeast coast of England. It is also known just as Holy Island. It has a recorded history from the 6th century. It was an important centre of Celtic Christianity under Saints Aidan of Lindisfarne,Cuthbert, Eadfrith of Lindisfarne and Eadberht of Lindisfarne. After Viking invasions and the Norman conquest of England a priory was reestablished. A small castle was built on the island in 1550.

Today our club ventured over the border into England and walked from Fenwick to Lindisfarne, crossing over to the island on the old Pilgrim's Way at low tide.
First we had to negotiate the main London to Edinburgh rail line; it is necessary to call on the railside phone to let the signalman know we want to cross, and he tells you when it is safe to do so. Then once we were across, we had to call him again to let him know we were all safely across. Quite exciting!
We followed the marker poles in the sand, and there are several wooden towers in case of getting trapped by the incoming tide. But we were fine.
We had refreshments, and then the HG and I walked to Lindisfarne Castle and explored it for a while, before heading back to the coach which brought us over the border and home again.
The weather was very kind to us, bright sunshine all day and we really enjoyed being able to walk without jackets.
A great day out!
