what a day!
Up early, hauled bag - getting heavier by the nanosecond - across 2 bridges and up a flight of stairs and, sweating like a mad thing, got onto the train. What a revelation - clean comfortable seats, air conditioning - British Rail (or whatever you're called now) take note! A 350 mile journey in just under 4 hours and it was lovely - the picture is the stunning Tuscan landscape as we rolled through (though I'm sure there are better images than mine). And then I got to Rome.
So, being a sensible type I thought I'd reserve my seat on the train to Verona for Saturday - you have to reserve even though you've got an interrail ticket and they charge ?10 for it, cheeky blighters. Cue THREE HOUR wait in the station for a 30 second transaction with a grumpy Italian. So, much as I'd love to regale you with my antics on a sunny afternoon in Rome, they entailed sitting on a train station floor trying not to be pissed off. It's all part of the adventure... I had fun trying to guess where the boys sitting on the floor next to me were from - they had very guttural accents (and, being teenage boys, didn't enunciate very well) and I figured them for Germans. But no, their ticket number was a few lower than mine, and out came Canadian passports. Good for them for having the nerve to come so far! Anyway, I had a really good pic from the station floor, but it's on my camera, which isn't sharing :-(
Might hop on and off a red bus tomorrow - don't feel like walking much!
