Book Club Camp 2016
It was a gorgeous weekend for early June… hot today! We were expecting 3 more book clubbers here but they weren’t able to come. So…. R and I had some time out in boats—her in the kayak and H and I in the rowing boat and a little time in the studio…of course there was coffee and eating (pancakes for breakfast) and talking and wine on the beach ….(photo by H)
AND talk bout the book , Ta-Nehisi Coates’ “Between the world and Me”. We still read a book by an African American at camp to remember our dear V who loved to come to camp but passed away many years ago now. We’ve read a lot of them, novels, slave narratives, histories and political stories. This one was depressing. A letter from father to son, written in 2015 about how it is in his world..my oversimplified summary is that the whites in all history plunder the blacks and more recently also the earth and the fear of police and schools is ever present with really no hope expected. His time at Howard University was his mecca and trips to Paris with his wife a highlight. He talked about many people I didn’t know as well as the well publicized police beatings or murders in the recent news. I think the son knows how much he is loved…but it's not an encouraging view of the world.
We had a fine time! I’m sorry the others couldn’t enjoy it but am understanding that it’s not for everyone who is getting old…. altho we’re not exactly camping in a tent. :-) R leaves early in the morning….and summer continues…
also counted the starfish in my 50 m stretch at a low tide. 24. look healthy to me....will keep checking,. (there used to be 100s there)
putting some on that other place from the weekend.....here
