Change your life.
So while I was thinking of something to watch on Netflix. I was contemplating how films have moulded who I am today.
You see, I find that films change my life. Not every film obviously but sometimes it's like you're supposed to watch that exact film. Like the stars have aligned and fate has brought you too this exact moment where you're supposed to watch this film at this time in your life. For some reason or another. This has happened to me a few times when I've been so moved and felt so, sort of uncomfortable, changed by this film.
I'm going to list some examples. Most of them are children's films because those are the ones that gets under your skin I think. Not because I watched them as a child but because I've seen them now and I feel like I can see the through them and see what it's really about to me.
1. Spirited Away. A very famous anime film I'm sure you're all aware of. I watched it in the assembly hall in middle school when I was 11 and I'd never watched a film like it. It had so many twists and turns and I really connected with the girl at the time.
2. Billy Elliot. It was the first time I had questioned gender and dance. I never thought a boy who dances couldn't be gay which is a crazy idea now because of course they can. It really opened my eyes to the possibility of standards with men.
3. Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium. I saw it when I was younger but it wasn't till I was older that it really touched me. I thought it was such a beautiful way of explaining death and how adults are still capable of remaining childish.
4. James and the Giant Peach. It was my first stop motion film I watched and my oh my, I was in love. A classic children's film when you're completely attached to it. That you feel like you and James are best friends and you feel so sorry for him. I really learned that dreams can come true.
5. Pirates of the Caribbean. This film series shaped me the most out of them all. I idolised every character and was completely overwhelmed in the fandom of pirates. I watched it four times a day for a whole year.
6. Hector and the Search for Happiness. I watched this just after the crash when I really needed it. I felt like it was meant to be to see this film. I haven't watched it again and I don't think I will. It was like it was so vital for that moment it won't be as good if I saw it again. I watched this film when I needed it most.
7. 12 Angry Men. If you haven't seen this film, I suggest you do because it's incredibly thought provoking. It's about a court case where everyone on the jury think this boy is guilty expect one. And it all unfolds.
Happy blipping.
