The exotic element in Whitby, Lord Shiva and co.
Whitby shops contain not just the usual tourist trivia, but often some exotic votive items, and in this instance an Exquisitely carved figure of the Hindu god Shiva, wearing an enigmatic smile. This particular one is a fine example with an asking price of £1250 pounds so it's hardly an impulse buy!The Gothic community are present in large numbers here and these objects find a ready market hereabouts.
As you can see Ganesha and Buddha are in the window too, and if I am not mistaken one of the Kmer effigies.
These are not local copies, but imported from what are at least claimed to be genuine ethnic craft people.
The Goths were originally attracted by the Count Dracula connection and have become resident in quite some numbers in the town, which has organised two annual "Goth weekends"
This is their website announcing the next one.
Whitby Goth Weekend
Incidentally these exotic masks, figures, fabrics and objet d'art also make a very striking window display in the old town above the harbour.
I used the reflection to hopefully give some idea of the environment of shops in the old town where they are sold.
And if you are looking for something more practical (see additional image) love potion Number 9 is available without prescription.
(let's see you get that on the NHS, eh?)
Mind you the other products on sale look more suitable for people into dangerous sports to me, Slightly toxic skin cream and Flesh eating Bug repellent indeed!
