Marwick Head

We visited the Kitchener Memorial; although the stone built tower had always been named after Lord Kitchener a recently completed arc-shaped wall now includes the names of all 737 men who lost their lives when HMS Hampshire hit a mine in 1916.  A salutary tale.

The afternoon in the West Mainland saw a guest appearance of Lady Findhorn with the long-suffering Lordship.  It was evident that His Lordship’s top writers had been working on his script.  He is now taking bookings for Bar Mitzvahs. It will be difficult to top his story of one of Lady F’s descendants who stayed in Inverurie and owned a sewing machine.  Yes, they had to make their own entertainment in Inverurie.  As can be seen Lady F risked everything and insisted on a cliff top demonstration of her Pas de Basque dance step.  No safety net was involved.  HL is not in shot; he had made straight for his insurers.

After visiting the Birsay Bay Tearooms to test comestibles we deposited our guests in the heart of Hamnavoe to prepare themselves for their next day’s cycling expedition.

Petula Clark is 83.
