Hebrides Day 9, Landed
Today we travelled quickly through South Usit down to Eriksay where we caught the ferry to Barra. Another calm crossing with lots of gannets diving head first into the blue sea. Although the day started with cloud it soon cleared to give us a stunning sunny day.
Our first stop was the airport for a cup of tea and to get our bearings. Refreshed we walked through the machair up through the sand dunes. The area seemed to be covered in Moths, floating up as we walked by.
On to more sandy beachs and then back to the airport to see the plane arrive at 1.15 and landing on the beach just in front of us, amazing to watch it come in and land with a puff of sand.Security was a tiny metal rope dangled between two cones and the tiniest luggage collector no bigger than a golf buggy really.
On to Castlebay where we shared a burger and fries and an icecream listening to the pipe band, watching stragglers from the Barathon finish and with a seat outside with views to the Castle in the bay.
Vatersay was next , another little island but it was just a quick visit as we needed to get back to the ferry,
We saw Eriskay ponies with foals, more places from Peter Mays book Hebrides, and masses of wildflowers. On the way back along the machair way short eared owls flew along side the car and snipe sat on posts
