Unfamiliar territory
This evening, I met up with Hannah, Simon, and Max for a couple of drinks and a bite to eat at Common, before we ambled 'round to The Castle for a comedy show. I went along mainly because Amy Gledhill was performing and I'd previously seen her (along with my friend, David Callaghan) in Edinburgh and she was very, very funny.
But going to shows with David in Edinburgh has also taught me that comedy is a very broad church, one that can be rather challenging, which, to be honest, it was this evening. Max bailed early due to lack of lolz and Simon had to get away to do a bit of photography, which left Hannah and I sat on our own at the front which inevitably let to a bit of interaction with the stage...
Afterwards, I took the train back to Chorley to stay at the Minx's place even though she's in Glastonbury. I looked up from my book occasionally to see which station we were at. At some point, I felt like we must be nearly there but a glance out of the window showed an unfamiliar station. I nearly went back to my book but spent a moment looking at the list of upcoming stations that was scrolling at the end of the carriage. There was no mention of Chorley.
I looked out of the window again. There was no sign for the station. I looked back at the list of stations. I suddenly remembered all the works going on at Chorley station and made it to the door just before it closed.
(This close call reminded me of a time when I was in my early twenties and back living with my folks after university. One evening, after drinks in London with my chum, Ric, I took the train home but fell asleep. I woke in Effingham Junction, the end of the line, where I was turfed off the train into the cold, damp late evening. The next train back was at 0530.
I suffered for a few minutes before setting off to find a phone box, from where I rang home. My dad thought it was quite funny and said he'd come and get me. Unfortunately, it turned out he'd had a couple of beers and so my mum had to do the honours. She was - understandably, I now accept - less amused.)
