Bald Eagle

Lest We Forget

A colleague had this piece of trench art on his desk today. A little bit of research shows that it is a French round made in January 1918 by the French company Pouderies of Paris. It is 37mm calibre and the model is 1885.

On the side it commemorates Hill 60 which is just to the south of Ypres. The battle for Hill 60 took place between 17 April and 7 May 1915. Was it a soldier who had taken part in that battle, and survived, who fashioned this piece.

On the day that we remember the beginning of the battle of the Somme this somehow seems appropriate.
