Monday: Heavy Industry

Onwards this morning through Germany and then into Belgium. Although shorter, the drive somehow felt longer, mainly because Belgium is just one entire set of roadworks which made the driving, and the resultant traffic jams, very tedious. Luckily we weren't in a hurry as we had done the bulk of the drive yesterday.

The final part of today's trip was the overnight ferry from Zeebrugge to Hull. It's a 13 hour journey and luckily we had a nice little cabin to see us through. We stood on the deck watching the ferry cast off - it's quite an amazing features organising, loading all the vehicles etc.

The ferry itself was quite an interesting experience - people obviously treat it like a cruise. From the amateurish three piece band performing cover numbers in heavily accented English to Laurence, the perma-tanned bouffant pianist playing in the 'Clipper Lounge' while people sleep, with open mouths, on the seats around him....it has the making of a play.......
