Day Two
The saga of Jonathan (or Johanna) Livingston Seagull continues. He/she clearly lacks parental guidance and is not afraid of me or the cat that's prowling around. As the cat is the same size as the gull it's debatable who would come off worse in a scrap. Now making free of the garden, would quite like to be a house gull (no chance!) Thrills and spills in the bushes as (s)he can't get enough lift to get out of the garden. Has been offered water and sardines, but refused both. May not recognise food without help, of course.
I phoned the local nature reserve and spoke to a very nice man, who didn't quite say "Nature red in tooth and claw", but that's what he meant. All I can do is keep an eye on it, offer food, chase away the cat, and hope for the best. I'm soon going away for a few days and I suspect I'll come back to a dead gull. They don't survive at that age without parental support apparently.
