St Gordian's Cross

Next Sunday I will be leading the worship at the Annual Service up in the hills above Manor.   A local shepherd - a lovely lady - gave me at church this morning an extract from the Kirk Session Minutes of 140 years ago.

MANOR CHURCH, the twenty-third day of July 1876, which day the Kirk Session being met and constituted with prayer:

SEDERUNT - The Rev Peter MacVicar, Moderator, with Mr Linton and Mr Jeffrey, Elders.

Mr MacVicar brought under notice of the Session a note from Miss Naismith of Posso, with draft letter dictated to her by her father, Sir John Naismith, Bart, on his death bed, respecting an Annual Service on the site of St. Gordian’s Kirk, Kirkhope.     Whereupon after a consideration respecting the interest of Sir John had always taken in the Parish of Manor, it was moved and unanimously agreed that sympathising with the dying request of Sir John M Naismith and out of respect for the Ancient House of Posso, a diet of public worship shall be held at noon this year on Sabbath the 30th inst. and in future years on the 19th day of July, when that day shall fall upon a Sunday and when it does not so fall, then on the first Sunday following……
