Today belongs to Cristiano (Ronaldo or CR7 as is his trademark)

Today was the perfect day to arrive in Madeira. The local hero was devastated when he was injured in the first half of the final of Euro 16. Tears, genuine, when he was hurt. Tears again when, after a brave attempt to continue, he had to be stretchered off.

But those tears turned to joy when the Portuguese national team went on to win the trophy. He limped up to collect his medal, and the Cup.

I had to be up at 2.30 to catch an early plane to Madeira. I don't think many of the locals had had much more sleep.

The photo is the lounge of CRistiano's new venture - a hotel next to his museum. I went in and asked for a brochure but the charming young man told me that the hotel is only eleven days old..... And they are expecting the hero to visit ..... This week ?....... Into groupie mode.

Oh, and sport too - there's Andy Murray.
