Head

After a slow-ish start we eventually plodded up to the allotment and made some inroads into the grass and weeds, as well as picking produce and of course feeding the ravening hordes. Loads of broad beans, and the dwarf green bean plants are looking promising, but the climbing bean plants have been devastated by someone - snails, I'm pretty sure. The seed head is from a salsify plant. I tried growing some in the first year or two we had the allotment and decided the root really wasn't worth the bother, but it's grown self-seeded ever since and has a really pretty flower.

I was very relieved to see that blip friend Prostel is safe. But his image reminds me again of the price that children pay for adults' pride and greed - eg his frightened niece in Istanbul and the kids who went out to see the Bastille fireworks in Nice. Butch Hancock said it right:

All beings on this earth
You must not harm them
All weapons you hold deep within your heart
You must disarm them
Every man you meet's your son
Every woman is your daughter
Go find someone who's thirsty
And give 'em water.
