Trying to break through

These damselflies lay their eggs under water but have great difficulty breaking through the surface tension on the water surface.  The male grasps the female and helps by pushing the head of the female under the water but it is vital that he holds on in order to help her to escape from under the water once she has deposited her eggs.  It looks as if he is trying to drown her but she would not break through unaided.
