the apprentice...

...is now a fully fledged butcher and has been for some time.

I remember when T started at our local butcher as an apprentice with glorious curls stuffed into a cap and a fluffy beard  . Now he's a fully fledged butcher wielding a saw and a holster full of knives with great dexterity... and still wearing a cap!
