A Fahrenheit Life

Nelson Mandela International Day

So, our last full day in this wonderful country, unfortunately mostly spent doing chores.

We started off returning the extremely filthy car to the hire place and then walked to Sandton City shopping centre for, well, shopping. An absolute maze of shops and restaurants, we bought some kwaito cds, the biggest sound among urban black youth according to the Rough Guide, and some other SA souvenirs to take back home.

This was Mandela Day - how appropriate and lucky for us to actually be in Nelson Mandela Square, along with most of the world's press, on this day - the overarching objective of which is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better. It's a call for action for individuals to dedicate 67 minutes - in recognition of Mandela's 67 years - of their time to community service.

Out in the evening for our last meal we went to Moyo, a modern sophisticated African restaurant, for yet more fabulous food in a truly authentic and atmospheric setting. Steak, oxtail and ostrich was shared and enjoyed by all. I'm thinking it's not our cases that need to be weighed for the flight limit home...
