Interior Stavkirke--Washington Island--Door County

The term 'stave' in Stavkirke means pole or support.  There
are 12 center poles  in the interior of this church.  Viking shipbuilding
techneques characterize the all-wood construction.  note the
massive poles--former massive trees.  Overhead suspended from
the ceiling is a model of a Mackinaw schooner that plied the
Great Lakes in the mid-to late 18 hundreds and used for transporting
goods.  This handcrafted model was carved and hung in honor
of John Herschberger, head carpenter.
I wish I could go back when there are no tourists!!!!!
