A Bunch of Sweet Peas

Published in 1988 by Canongate, "A Bunch of Sweet Peas" by Henry Donald (charmingly illustrated by Ann Ross Paterson) is  a short story about the 1911 Daily Mail sweet pea competition which had a staggering 38,000 entries. Donald's aunt,  Mrs Fraser from Sprouston near Kelso, was the unlikely winner of the £1,000 first prize while his uncle, the Rev. DD Fraser, won the £50 third prize.
