Here's the MV Conway Castle passing through Digli's Lock near Worcester. The vessel needs to be guided through by crew, who attach a grappling hook to a steel cable in the lock wall, and use pulling power to haul the boat through the lock. Occasionally the hook falls off the pole, and both fall into the lock.
This is the reason for the long faces here today, and the paparazzi passengers. Eventually a magnet was fetched and lowered into the lock. It stuck to the side of the boat! Finally the grappling hook was retrieved. I was relieved to see that there was also a spare pole and hook.
We went from Upton on Severn to Worcester and back. I loved the cathedral, and would like to go back. I have not been able to edit this photo, and will not write any more as I am feeling a bit queasy for some reason.
