The Scenic Trail

We have driven to Edinburgh so many times, but never have we taken ‘The Scenic Trail’. Today we were in no hurry to get there, so we decided to see where this route would take us. And we were suitably impressed. We found some great scenery, some very narrow roads through the hills, two cafés that did excellent coffee, a fine waterfall, the rarest fern in Britain, several beautiful lochs . . . and a medieval chapel.

Rosslyn Chapel

Built in 1446 this is an extraordinary building with a long history. Unfortunately you can’t even get into the Visitor Centre, never mind the Chapel itself, without paying £9. As we were not intending spending much time there, we went round the back and took photographs over the wall. We were amazed at how many people there were and how many coaches. Then we discovered that it is featured in The Da Vinci Code and that is what probably brings many visitors. As the only person in the world (it would seem) who has neither read the book nor seen the film, I obviously would not have appreciated a visit anyway.
