Wootton Wawen II
Having arrived at my late father's home on family business the previous evening we were grateful not to be locked out (as I had been the time before), but instead the downstairs loo was broken, the telephone had been mistakenly cut off and one of the several alarm systems in the house was emitting a piercing low battery alarm every half-minute! Sorting out these problems took up the first three hours of the evening, not to mention considerable expense, and made it too late to go out for the planned commemorative evening meal.
However, we got a lot done that evening and the following morning before setting off for home. The return trip involved another stop to see the miniature ponies at the end of Lindridge Road, and further investigations of the engineering feats of the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal.
The first of these was at Shirley, on the outskirts of Birmingham. Beside the Flaming Grill pub called The Drawbridge there is an actual drawbridge crossing the canal, which we had to traverse to reach the pub where we had lunch.
I also wanted to return to Wootton Wawen to see the aqueduct there again, as on my previous visit I hadn't actually discoved until after the event that, unusually, the footpath is level with the floor of the canal there. This time we crossed the aqueduct on the path and made our way down to the road from the other side.
