Painting

Gale force winds, heavy rain, cold. I'm stuck inside without a blip so decided to photograph a painting I completed earlier in the year.

Variation on a Theme of Cezanne I 2012
Acrylic, graphite, Colourfix, marble dust, and chop on polyester canvas
44.8 x 56.2 cm

Cezanne has always been something of a hero and muse for many years. He was the first painter I discovered who taught me how to look at nature and interpret, as opposed to copying. Mostly by way of Earle Loran's book "Cezanne's Composition". And then onto Cy Twombly, Anselm Kiefer, Fred Williams, Willem de Kooning, among others.
Art and art making (painting, drawing, photography) is such a wonderful interest, in my case 'passion'. It has helped me climb over many of those hurdles that life occasionally chucks in front of us.
The above painting, I understand, is not going to be to everyones taste. And that is OK. Aesthetics and aethetic appreciation is a much contested arena.
In case you are wondering about the meaning of the word "chop" in the title above - here is a very short explanation. There are two chops in this work. They are the dark red squares which are in fact stamps made with a stone that has the design carved onto it. The chop in the top right quadrant is a Chinese translation of the phrase "Black Mountain", and is a 'mood seal'. The chop in the lower left quadrant is a Chinese translation of my name and is a 'name seal'.
