Sri Lanka Day Four
Pinnawala
After a short visit to the Peradeniya botanical gardens we drove to Pinnawala to the elephant orphanage. It's home to around eighty elephants abandoned or injured (and sometimes disabled) in the wild. To see them all taking their daily 'bath' in the river was quite a sight I assure you!
Their surroundings here are very natural and it's obvious that they are taken care of brilliantly. We got to get really close to them and at one point, whilst I was snapping away, a little baby elephant stomped up to me to pose with me for Larissa's camera! Very cute (although it did cause a flurry of staff to rush in and demand a 'tip' for the privilege).
Later, after some extremely heavy rain, we stayed in a very posh, very English hotel (from the old British colonial days) in Nuwara-Eliya and played snooker with a local Sri Lankan.
