Local crafts

Hand blown, recycled glass items are readily available in the fair trade shops here in Cairo. A lot of it is produced in small workshops in an area known as The City of the Dead. This part of Cairo is full of tombs for the past Muslim inhabitants of Cairo, but became housing for the very poor.

A local guide is needed to help you find your way through the area to where the glassblowers are located. I went once a while ago; a fascinating insight into a very different part of Cairo.

This purchase was one of my two when I returned from Istanbul. It adds to my collection of recycled glass including dinner plates, small bowls and glass baubles. However, it's not often you will find this beautiful red glass.
