Fred Gilroy & the Belsen Stragglers

Sarah used to come to Scarborough, Whitby and Filey as a youngster so this trip brings back fond memories. This artwork though wasn't here (Scarborough North Bay) at that time.

This is the representation of Fred Gilroy (1921-2008) by Ray Lonsdale. Fred was an ordinary working man whose life was profoundly changed by his experiences in the Second World War. His involvement in the liberation of Belsen aged 24 affected him for the rest of his life.
