Americans seize Royal Navy warship !

In on the 23rd Sept 1779 the Battle of Flamborough Head occurred off this headland.

An American colonist John Paul Jones in the ship 'Bon Homme Richard', engaged Sir Richard Pearson's Royal Navy ship the 'Serapis'.

What it doesn't say on the plaque at Flamborough head is that the Americans won and captured the Serapis and took it away, later handing it over to the French.

(Jones is regarded as the father of the US Navy)
