In the Strong Country

The message  on the hoarding is iconic, although only those of a certain age will recall this and similar signs viewed by train passengers as they approached Hampshire from London or other parts.
This one is mounted by the side of the part of track which is the living museum of the railway preservation group running Romsey Signal Box.
The brewery itself  in the Horsefair at Romsey is sadly no more, although at one time it provided the principal industry for the town, and its ales were well known throughout central Hampshire.
It was founded as long ago as 1778 and became known as Strongs in the mid 19th century. By 1969 it became part of Whitbread and sadly brewing ceased there 35 years ago.
But those advertising hoardings were part of an era alongside the main railway tracks.

It stirred many nostalgic memories to see this one preserved as part of the town’s history, alongside the iconic signal box and short track.
