Day Five - Bus to Huaraz
We left the hostel early this morning to catch a bus to Huaraz. The taxi picked us up from the hostel and raced through Lima, we honestly feared for our lives! The driving in Lima is on par, maybe even worse with that of Thailand, anyone who's been will know that's saying something!!
We eventually reached the bus terminal in one piece and checked in our luggage. Cruz del Sur is definitely the Emirates of bus companies, we had 160 degree reclining seats, blankets, pillows and a hot lunch, it was amazing!
I fell asleep as we left Lima and woke up to fog covering the whole of the jagged coastline and tonnes of shanty towns scattered along the road edge. It's unbelievable to be so close to the city centre yet see so much poverty, it really puts life into perspective.
After three back to back Spanish films, some chicken and potatoes, a broken down bus (thankfully not ours!) and a windy ride up through the beautiful mountains, we arrived in Huaraz.
Everything seemed pretty calm and organised whilst we picked up our luggage. As soon as we left the terminal, we were pounced on by about 20 taxi men yelling 'Taxi? Taxi??' We felt like we'd just walked out of the stage door after a Broadway show! We'd already figured our walking route so, perhaps bravely, decided to navigate the streets of Huaraz ourselves.
We found the hostel fairly easily and checked ourselves in. My first observations were that the room was super clean and neat, however we then realised the stench from the road reached our bedroom and the room had no external windows, which, knowing what the view should have been, was a little disappointing!
Maybe due to the altitude (now over 3,000m) or maybe due to the long journey, we skipped dinner and went straight to sleep ready to organise some trekking tours the following day!
