Berries like pink plastic
I love these berries - whatever they are - that are appearing on the bushes near the top of the Chilean hillside in Benmore Gardens. I'm sure they are a relative of the berries that grow in the Rectory grounds - the ones we reckon are a sure sign that purple and pink candles are the order of the day for the Advent Wreath in the weeks before Christmas. (If you didn't know there was a controversy about this, you'll find that there are those who uphold red candles, in which case these beautiful things would be purposeless. But I digress...)
A quiet afternoon in the gardens: we saw a tiny deer that at first I thought was a dog out on the hillside on its own, and there was virtually no birdsong for some reason as the slight drizzle began. Later we saw a man with an unleashed dog; this is strictly against the rules and made us cross. The gardeners have even more reason to be angry ...
Better just think of the berries.
