Charles Darwin Sculpture Garden.
A bronze sculpture by Anthony Smith, Christ's College 2002 - 2005, forms the centrepiece of the Darwin Garden. It captures a moment in the early summer of 1831, when Charles Darwin, a 22 year old student at Christ's College, Cambridge, was planning an expedition to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. He hoped to follow in the footsteps of one of his heroes, the explorer and naturalist Alexander Von Humboldt. Fate decided otherwise. He was requested to be a gentleman companion and naturalist to Captain Robert FitzRoy aboard HMS Beagle, on a round the world voyage of discovery 1831 to 1836. The garden represents a botanical voyage, reflecting the variety of floras he would have seen - constrained by Britain's climate.
