Sakakawea/Sacajawea - Bird Woman
The correct spelling of her name is not what is important about this courageous woman. In his journal, William Clark wrote, "The wife of Shabono (Charbonneau) our interpreter we find reconciles all the Indians as to our friendly intentions. A woman with a party of men is a token of peace." Today we visited some of the earth lodges in New Town, ND where Native Americans in this area lived. We spoke with a lady from the Hidatsa tribe who shared much of the history of the Three Affiliated Tribes: Mandan. Hidatsa and Arikara. We then learned more details about the Lewis and Clark expedition from ND to the Pacific Ocean. We ended our day in Bismarck where I took this photo near the state capital building.
