piece of history
skipped away early today from my volunteering stint at New Lanark as I am heading off for a girly day out - lunch and shopping - and wanted to get this done!! talk about blip ruling your life!
This is one of New Lanark's prized artifacts. It is an original export label dating from around 1820. New Lanark cotton was exported all over the world and in 1818 Robert Owen commissioned a series of drawings from artist John Winning, who also taught in the school. Some of these were used as an early form of marketing, like this label, which was for cotton destined for Russia. The wording is something like 'first quality cotton yarn from New Lanark Mills'.
please don't feel you have to comment if you are not interested in my historical blips - I won't be offended!
