Market fare

I saw a TV programme last night about the benefits of walking so as it was a fine morning I decided to walk to the weekly Country Market. I used to go regularly when there was family to buy for, but I haven't been for a while.
I was pleased to see that the Market which takes place in our Old Barn Hall is really thriving. I bought a lemon cake, two jars of marmalade and a jar of chutney. I met some WI friends and enjoyed a coffee with them. There is a great atmosphere there.
Country Markets were started by the Women's Institute after the First World War to provide an outlet for people's garden produce in the hard post war years. They are still sometimes erroneously called WI Markets. However they split from the WI in the 1990s because charity law didn't allow the WI to trade.
Beautiful day today and I have been gardening. Yesterday I bought some wallflowers, some Sweet Williams and some pansies, and I hope they make a bright display in the spring.
