The Law Won

Well, as much as I like the outside of these buildings, I hope I never have an appointment on the inside!  This is the façade of the Supreme law courts here in Edinburgh - part of Parliament Square, set just off the Royal Mile.  The statue is of Charles II on his horse and the Mercat Cross is situated just around the corner (a photo for another day).  This square has been in place since 1632 and was built on the old graveyard of St Giles Kirk. The old Tolbooth used to be situated adjacent to the square and it was from here where people who committed treason in 1661 were led to their execution beside the Mercat Cross.  The statue of Charles II is made entirely of lead and is supposedly the oldest equestrian statue in the UK, dating from around 1685.
