Bunker Hill
A long day today walking around Boston, one of my favourite cities. Last time we were here we 'did' all the sights so didn't feel we had to do that again, but we didn't finish the section of the Freedom Trail over to Bunker Hill so we started there today. This is a view of the monument at the top of the hill which commemorates the first major battle of the American Civil War. After that we walked back through Boston Common and up to Back Bay, before aiming back to the hotel through the Theatre District and Chinatown. I don't know how far we walked altogether but our feet know it was a long way!
On the way we stopped at the Holocaust Memorial ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_England_Holocaust_Memorial ) which at first sight doesn't look too exceptional (I've added a shot of it in the extra). However, it is tremendously moving; six glass towers engraved with seven digit numbers that represent each of the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust, and also quotes from some of the survivors. One in particular I remember quite choked me up when I read it last time I was here; it had the same effect this time. I've quoted it below.
ILSE, A CHILDHOOD FRIEND of mine,
once found a raspberry in the camp
and carried it in her pocket all day
to present to me that night on a leaf.
IMAGINE A WORLD in which
your entire possession is
one raspberry and
you gave it to your friend.
Only a short stop in Boston this time; tomorrow we pick up our car and head off into New England.
