SUPPORT THE GIRL CHILD EVENT
For thousands of families back to school time is special; seeing our children moving onwards is a great feeling. Here in Ireland our Secondary schooling is free, but lots of other little costs mount up. Also, girls have equal opportunity to boys. Our schools and teachers are excellent where hard work can provide the opening to a successful and fulfilled life.
In another part of our common Globalized World, Malawi, there is a whole other story. Secondary schools are fee paying; school buildings are little more than a shelter; teachers are badly qualified; and badly (or not) paid; class sizes are from 50 upwards; school books are expensive, and regularly unavailable, while copies and pens are beyond the reach of some.
Only 4 out of every 100 rural girls get to finish secondary school.
This time last year we wrote to all schools in the Mzuzu area, a radius of about 20 km, and ended up enabling 88 girls to get to secondary school, and then bringing them to special Saturday Classes in our new Centre for Learning, which always includes a meal. We lost none to commonplace child marriage or pregnancy. However, we have no lofty ambitions for the project like University or third level education, but we have seen many exam results have improved greatly and we are fully passionate about its future and the possibilities.
We would love to have them all sponsored and we believe the money will come from somewhere, as we are blessed with amazing supporters. It costs €180 to pay fees, books, clothes, assist families, transport and other girlie stuff, which regularly results in girls missing many days from school each month. This Girl Child Project is our new madness.
In our eleven years we have never run a fundraising event (but others have done so, to support us), BUT on Thurs Sept 29th at 8pm (Doors 7.30pm) we plan to have a Music Night in St Mary’s Parish Church, Lucan, to raise funds to Support the Girl Child.
To provide the night’s music, St Mary’s Chorale will be joined by Cathy Jordan and Tom Morrow from Dervish with Tony Byrne and Éamonn Coyne.
We hope you can come along and support what promises to be an enjoyable night – more details and tickets from wellsforzoe.org/shop/girl-child-gig-ticket or 086 8512285.
Thanks to all concerned, the night will enable about 40 girls to take up their places in Secondary school, BUT WE HAVE 152
