Oh! Deer : < ((
When I mowed this lawn last week, I was not aware of catching the cage on this tree. I certainly did not notice it, when I looked over the lawn afterwards. However, this morning Mrs GOG looked out and the cage was some thirty feet from the tree, with the tree well and truly destroyed. This cherry tree had been growing for three or four years and had had its first fruit this year, so we were looking forward to a reasonable crop next year. Now, it is unlikely to survive although this is just possible, all of the greenery has been eaten as has two feet of the main trunk bark from about one foot above ground by the Fallow deer that visit out garden!
It is nice watching them in the garden, but this year alone they have destroyed many hundred pounds worth of plants. We have a reasonable fence adjoining the marsh and the station, but they still manage to enter the garden; the Fallow deer can easily jump a six-foot high fence and even out injured Hoppy can jump more than three feet! The cost of putting up an adequate fence high enough to prevent them getting in is prohibitive.
