Great Northern Diver or Common Loon

I went out to take pictures of Loch Ryan when among the normal collection of seagulls one bird stood out. Much larger than the other birds he was on his own and he was identified ,by a local, as a Northern Diver. I was able to watch him fishing all afternoon and he is well named as a diver. He would fly along the Loch until he would climb rapidly before dropping like a stone and disappearing under the water for some considerable time. When I researched the bird I discovered that he can dive to a remarkable 200 ft. The Diver rarely breeds in the UK but migrates down from Iceland and although a rare sight can range down as far as Fishguard.
