Inishturk Island

It's an island weekend. We decided to take a Ferry to Inishturk this morning, though the wind was very high. But we checked with the Ferry company and they were still going, so we chanced it.

Holy God, that was some trip. Everyone on the boat was sick, one of them on the deck. I barely held on to my stomach, and the same with my friend. Many of us stood at the doorway of the cabin to get the air. Beads of sweat on everyone's brow. It took nearly until we were coming back at 6.30pm that evening to feel better. Luckily the trip back was not as bad.

The island was beautiful though, I fell in love with it. Despite the weather, which saw me soaked through at one point, it was an amazing walk around the coastline. We followed the elevation of the coastline and were treated to some great views of the cliffs and deep, deep gullys, and fabulous rock face patterns. The wind dried me off fairly quickly.

We came across a great GAA pitch dug into a hollow, surrounded by rock and steep grassy banks, it was a surreal sight. A community of 56 people live on the island, 50 minutes of a Ferry ride to the mainland. They had had a Sports Day the day before where someone got injured and had to be helicoptored off the island to the hospital.

When we got back to the Community Centre/Pub, the rest of our Ferry colleagues were there since 3pm. They had got so wet they turned back from their hike and watched the Dublin v Meath game. We got the Ferry back at 6.30pm and went up on the deck at the top of the boat which turned out to be a good plan.
