FrogDrama

The other night around 11:00pm I heard a loud cry in the back yard...high pitched and desperate sounding, coming from the pond. I'd heard that sound before, in fact several times before! It's the sound a frog makes when it's been caught, by an owl or a hawk or a snake. It's a sound that once you hear it, you'll never forget what it is. It gives me goosebumps on my skin and all my tiny hairs stand straight up...a very primal response I guess. I grabbed my spotlight and rushed out to see a very large frog, maybe a bullfrog or perhaps a large male green frog with the back half of a smaller frog deeply in it's mouth. I made a split second decision to play 'goddess' and lunged for the frogs, hoping to grab them and free the smaller frog. But before I could manage that, the large frog leapt into the pond and dove under the lily pads, no doubt hoping to drown it's struggling victim. I got my pond net with it's telescoping pole and when the frogs surfaced I tried my best to net them or at least to free the smaller frog. Sad to say I was not successful, and although I searched for a while longer, there was no sign of the frogs. Did the smaller frog get eaten or did it get away and survive? Do my neighbors think I'm a crazy wild woman? Maybe, Maybe, Probably!
In hindsight, I should have grabbed my camera, those two frogs would have been one heck of a blip...or not perhaps. ;)
