Sleep well little Mac
We got a call from the vets this morning. Mac had taken a turn for the worse. We were told it's probably the end and we could be there if we wanted. We put on our shoes and went straight round.
He was a sorry sight. Barely lifting his head and struggling for breath. His blood glucose levels were low and he was on an IV to try and replace what he had lost. We each gave him a cuddle and went to wait for the vet to talk us through everything. The vet took about 50 mins to come to us and by the time she did Mac had picked up a bit. She advised us that he should be transferred to a veterinary hospital where he would be cared for 24/7 should he have another relapse. P had a trip with Rainbow's to the theatre this afternoon so it was up to Mr J to make the hour long drive to the hospital.
When they arrived the prognosis wasn't good. His stomach was failing, possibly his liver and kidneys too. His white blood cells are practically nonexistent and he was unable to regulate his own temp and had to be kept on a heat pad.
The vet advised that he was unlikely to ever recover. The odds were staked and not in his favour. There was nothing more that could be done.
He was such a little fighter but there was nothing of him left. He was skin and bone and we made the sad decision that enough was enough. We didn't want to inflict anymore suffering on him. We didn't want him to have to fight anymore. James stayed with him as he fell asleep...
I told P what was happening. It's only fair that she knows. She took it well and we both had a good cry together. I'm crying again typing this.
This is one of the few pictures I have of Mac. Of the two brothers together. This is how we will remember him.
We may have only had him in our lives for 2 weeks and 6 days but he made a big impact on our hearts and we love him dearly.
