Shovelers

Having made a couple of overdue telephone calls I had time for a brisk walk round Ferry Meadows before taking Ben to Stamford. Although yesterday's wind blew a lot of leaves down, some trees, particularly the field maples (see extra), are just at their best.

I was also pleased to spot lots of feeding shoveler, who looked particularly glorious in the sparkling morning light, and are a sure sign that winter is upon us. I think the males are one of the most stunning ducks, with their iridescent green heads, yellow eyes and rich chestnut flanks. The females are inevitably more subdues, but still easily identified by the shape of their beak.

It's certainly going to be chilly tonight - keep warm everybody!
