Facing into the Sun

Our very first sunflower of the year, caught from behind as it was soaking up the sun by facing directly into it.

This view shows how the flowerhead is kept in place by the support structure, and I love the fine hairs on the stalk.

Here we see what the same flower looks like from a more conventional angle. It is really still unfurling -- it started to open this morning -- but we can already see where the the seeds will form.
