Krakow tourist
We headed south of the Wisla river this morning to Podgorze which was Krakow's ghetto during WWII. Our first stop was the Pharmacy Under the Eagle (Apteka pod Orlem) which was run during the war by Tadeusz Pankiewicz, the ghetto's only Gentile inhabitant, choosing to live and work inside the ghetto along with his three Polish assistants. After the war, Israel recognised him as 'Righteous Among the Nations'.
From there a short walk to Oskar Schindler's factory (Fabryka Schindlera) The former administration block is now part of the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow, and Schindler's office forms part of the "Factory of Memory" which can be seen in the extra with Mrs Rex standing next to enamel pots similar to those made in the factory during the ghetto years. The remaining extras show some of the exhibits within the administration block.
Oskar Schindler died in Frankfurt in 1974, and was buried in a Christian cemetery on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. He too was named as 'Righteous Among the Nations' for rescuing his 1200 workforce from persecution.
We'd had enough sightseeing for the day after those visits.
