A veritable assault on the senses in Indonesia today.

Hearing impacted by a poorly placed door between hotel rooms and a neighbour who can move between a disturbing snoring pattern, heavy floor clumping and loud spluttering and hacking with impressive frequency and speed. Ears hilariously impacted by trying to teach our driver Ribut to say ‘carrot’ after the team had sent me away for the day clutching a jus wortel (carrot juice). I got as far as ‘corlet’ and gave up. Wortel is a strange word in Indonesian – I think it must come from Dutch.

Tastebuds narrowly avoided being impacted by the durian fruit I was presented with, which I had to decline as I haven’t fared well with it in the past. Buds positively impacted by fried stuff, milky coffee and crispy chicken.

In Indonesia nostrils always delicately impacted by the clove-smelling kretek cigarettes. I wondered why I was being left alone to work in a closed cell-like room and apparently it was because the team wanted to shield me from smoke. I decided to take collaboration and company over the long-term effects of passive smoking.

Touch impacted by damned mouth ulcers that won’t go away, sore throat and general feelings of oddness. Staving off some sort of illness – the source impossible to know given the variety of places I go to. However touch also positively impacted by a surprisingly comfortable bed and powerful hot shower.

Sight impacted by…

Actually, a slow day in the sight department.
