In Thai "water" is a very general word, it means anything liquid. So at a restaurant, they will ask, "What kind of water do you want?" You must specify "plain water," "carbonated water" (soda), "fruit water" (juice), etc.

And make sure you specify carefully because "plain water" is "nam plaow" but fish sauce (aka, fish water) is "nam pla."
