Gifts or guards?

We found a few of these beasties in front of our house gate today. No one seemed to be sure of the reason for their presence. No obvious herders in site. The local boys were amused. We hurried by the horn end, or the opposite end, and nobody minded. I'll go out shortly to see if they are still there.
