Fish Stall

One of the most popular, yet unexpected stalls at the Romsey Farmers’ Market is this fresh fish stall straight from the Portsmouth Fish Market.
Today was no different, and while at most other stalls the accent was firmly on farm or home produced food, this fish market retains high popularity.
Today there was the choice of lobster and crab, as well as a variety of wet fish, although sadly my anticipation of being able to buy a bag of winkles resulted in disappointment.
Romsey is in the centre of the Test Valley which is firmly trout fishing country, with the River Test flowing through the valley and providing some of the finest trout fishing, and breeding waters in the country, yet this stall presenting sea caught fish and other seafood is in direct contrast to the stalls where you will find smoked trout.
It is all part of the variety of Farmers’ Markets. One I have visited recently provides a children’s games area. Others, like this one on occasions, has live farm animals providing the opportunity for youngsters to get up close to sheep, lambs, goats, and of course, chicken and rabbits.
Another I have visited provides a coffee stall, with seating and the Sunday papers.

I’ll be back again after Christmas.  And hope that next time I will be able to gtake home a bag of winkles!
